Important Information for Manufacturers and/or Suppliers shipping to the United States

Wood Packaging Materials (wooden crates/boxes shipments to/ from Canada/USA)

In 2012, the USA decided to cancel the agreement which exempted Canada from international ISPM #15 shipping regulations and enforce them on all wood packaging shipments originating from Canada. But until now, they have yet to officially implement it.

What does this mean for Canadian manufacturers and suppliers shipping products into the USA?

There is so much confusion around this, because the US Customs and Border protection website says all imported crates need to be ISPM #15 compliant. It doesn’t mention the Canada exemption. https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/720/~/import-and-export-requirements-for-wood-packaging-material-%28wpm%29-into-the-u.s.

In addition, many Shipping and Courier companies require all crates containing wood to be certified ISPM #15 to eliminate issues at the border. We've had crates returned to us because stamping requirements have been interpreted differently by customs officials and shipping companies.

To ensure that there will be no delays or costly returns, we recommend that all crates containing wood be certified ISPM #15 for USA bound shipping.
